Generally it's villains that lay traps for the players, but occasionally the PCs get a chance to do it. Once we set up an entire village as a huge death trap for an invading army. We put up an icy field with spikes, and we rigged a building to blow up while they were inside. Good times.

I'm curious: what did you do to villagers?

You know I can't actually remember. I know they were safely out of the way though. Probably just had them hide outside of the town.

Traps are awesome. My gnome tinkerer was a specialist on needlessly convoluted, yet awesomely spectacular traps. This, combined with fairly good stealth skills (and later potion upon potion of greater invisibility), made her often able to plant traps all around a group of enemies before our party announced their arrival. Boom, snap, crackle and pop, and what could have been a very challenging battle session with a tribe of ogres was suddenly reduced to a very one-sided whoopin' of a band of CON-drained ogre weaklings with around half their initial HP left.

Her best moment must have been rigging a whole dungeon while the rest of the party was drawing attention to themselves outside. Our rogue's very successful dungeoneering checks made sure my gnome knew what kind of trap to set in every lair and corner to maximize the damage to every enemy once they returned to their abode from their wild goose chase. Picking them off one by one after that was a cakewalk.

She eventually succumbed to a row of unsuccessful rolls that caused her to be spotted by a lich we were trying to ambush. Oh, well, at least she went out with a bang, as the deadly touch of the undead spellcaster triggered the explosive spell trap she had been carrying, resulting in one very dead gnome (we don't use Raise Dead in this homebrew world, as we try to give death some sort of permanent feel) but also a half-dead lich with a potent silence spell cast over him, robbing him of many dangerous spells. Suffice to say that the rest of the party went above and beyond to avenge their dear companion.

Her corpse was brought to her homeland and given a proper burial. Her grave was marked with her own, custom-made headstone. Which was trapped. Because of course it was.
