In pathfinder at least, armor takes a long time to put on. It's one of those rules that doesn't get used much because people tend to just have their armor on all the time. If someone were caught without their armor on, by the tone they managed to get it on the fight would be over. Twice.

As the GURPS fanboy that keeps commenting on such things, I'll add that in that system you're even less likely to spend time donning armor during combat. While the Damage Resistance can easily save your life in low tech settings, GURPS combat rounds are one second a piece.

It can be well worth the expense in some settings to custom tailor/enchant armor you can sleep in. ;)

I know pathfinder has a feat to let you sleep in most armors, just not the really big ones. Pathfinder rounds are 6 seconds and it takes 5 minutes to put on the heavy armors, and there are rarely fights that last more than 10 rounds even.

There is probably an Advantage (GURPS equivalent of Feats) that works in a similar manner, but if there is I'm spacing on it. The thing with GURPS is it is as much an RPG system as it is a toolkit to build your own RPG system... so there are many workarounds but few are appropriate for every potential setting.

One of the reasons why many prefer having a good Active Defense (Dodge, Parry or Block) as at worst those just require keeping a weapon/shield nearby.

In my personal experience a lot of GURPS combat seems to resolve in 10 rounds or less as well, even though that translates to 10 seconds and not 60 seconds. Probably because the common element (the players) don't do so well with longer combats, especially in a large group. XD
