Crafting is cool because it's one of the few skills where there are actually rules for what happens when you exceed the check. I mean, getting a 37 stealth when the guards only have a perception of 10 isn't any better than if you had gotten a 12. Other than the fact that it's fun to get really high on your skill checks, even if it's no different than if you had just barely passed.

Having more advanced rules for something like crafting isn't odd, but I guess I'm used to systems where there are always benefits to a critical success or failure... and the the definition for such things is always a failure by X margin. Since the only one I remember off the top of my head is GURPS, probably barring some exceptions, making your roll by 10 or more is always a critical success and failing by 10 or more is always a critical failure.

So while you still may have a "wasted" crit it is more "...not much a crit can do" than it doing nothing at all.

Magic werefox IN SPACE! story again, and I apologize if I told that one before.
Because of my fobia of dogs I couldn't get to the spaceship openly (and I understand how weird it sounds without a context). So I choose sneaking option. I wasn't doing very good at stealth check on the way, someone noticed me, but they didn't believe there could be a fox in the middle of a spaceport, so I got away. Incide the cpaceship, however, I scored a crit. So after thinking a minute GM decided that I was completely invicibe to all ship's automatic, mashinery, cameras and other tech... things.
This played to my advantage when later I required to summon a demon abord a spaceship, but that's a completely different story.

It's nice to get a GM who incorporates effects for excessive success. It can get a little silly though, like rogues appearing to "disappear in a puff of smoke."
